Obituary for Bertie J. Noordhoek

Bertie Jean Noordhoek was born to Herbert and Henrietta Ray on July 26, 1935. She was most likely born at the family farm outside of Sumter, South Carolina as that was commonplace. She passed away on November 12, 2018 at the Journey Hospice Home in Lincoln, Nebraska of natural causes.

Bertie grew up as a farmer’s daughter in South Carolina and graduated from Hillcrest High School. She went on to attend and graduate from Greenville Junior College.

After graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Baptist Bible Institute in Florida where she met and married Bernard Noordhoek on January 16, 1958. Bernard then attended Florida State University and Bertie was the Head Secretary for the Florida State Athletic Department. Together they served churches in rural Florida.

They moved to Missouri where Bernard finished his seminary and they went on to Cainsville, Missouri where they pastored the Methodist Church and several country churches.

In 1971, they moved to Oakland, Nebraska where Bernard pastored both the First United Methodist and Westside church and Bertie served as a pastor’s wife for 6-7 years.

She also owned and ran the Oakland Variety Store and Oakland Furniture Store with Bernard.

After her husband’s death, she went to work at the Oakland Heights Nursing Home for 30 years. She started in the kitchen and later served as Activity Director.

Bertie was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, her parents, 2 sisters and a brother.

Survivors include 4 sons and 3 daughters-in-law and one daughter and son-in-law: Benny Noordhoek of Lincoln, Mike and Melinda Noordhoek of Arizona, Jeff and Liz Noordhoek of Lincoln, Chris and Mary Noordhoek of Kunshan, China, and Dena and Rick Shaffer of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Bertie also has 8 grandchildren: Brandon, Brooke, Emily, Philip, Abbey, Gunnar, Archer and Terran.

She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren: Sean, Kennedy, Calisie, Isabelle, Annabelle, Chloe, Caeden, Ember, Ruah and Shiloh.
