Suggestions for Obituaries

The obituary should be written in story form as you want the pastor to read it. The following items should be considered when preparing the obituary:

  • The full name of the deceased
  • The names of his/her father and mother (maiden)
  • The place and date of his/her birth
  • The schools from which he/she graduated or which attended
  • The facts about his/her marriage (the last, if more than one)
  • The facts about his/her children
  • The facts about his/her church
  • The facts about his/her lifework
  • The facts about his/her military service
  • The facts about his/her fraternal affiliations
  • Any other information or comments desired
  • A listing of the survivors and where they’re from
  • A listing of preceded in death by

The following is a sample of a written obituary. It is given only as a suggestion. Yours may be written as you desire.

Obituary: John S. White

John Scott White was born to Sam and Gertrude (Gray) White February 14, 1925, on a homestead 4 miles northwest of Craig, Nebraska. He passed away April 28, 2007, at the Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland after a lingering illness.

When he was 6 he moved with his family to eastern Nebraska. He received his education in country schools near Tekamah and attended high school in Tekamah.

On April 5, 1946, he was married to Pearl Hunt in Lyons, Nebraska. The lived most of their lives on a farm south of Lyons. In addition to farming, he ran a threshing machine for a number of years. They retired and moved to Lyons in 1985.

John served in the army in World War II and was a member of the Lyons American legion, and of the ______________ Church. He was active until failing health prevented his participation.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Pearl.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Ellen and Elmer Moore of Tekamah, Verna and Glenn Reilly of Oakland; Son: Harold of rural West Point; two brothers: Bill and Fred of Tekamah; Two sisters and brothers-in-law: Margie and John Lacey of Decatur, Esther and Walter Laurent of Uehling; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
