Obituary for Martin "Pat" Shafer

Martin “Pat” Shafer was born to Roland and Kay (Simpson) Shafer December 27,1949 in Omaha, Nebraska. He passed away June 2, 2019 at CHI Heart Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 69 years. We feel blessed that we all had Pat two extra years, thanks to the medical care of the LVAD team of Dr. Sagar Damle and Kelly Stutzman of Lincoln.

Pat attended Goose Pasture country school where he either walked or rode his bike the ¼ mile to school every day. His Grandma Ethel Shafer was one of his teachers there. Pat graduated from Tekamah High School in May of 1968. He attended University of Nebraska Lincoln and Dana College in Blair, Nebraska.

Pat married his high school sweetheart, Harriet Hawkins, July 19, 1969 at First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. This coming July 19th would have been their 50th wedding anniversary.

To this union, Pat and Harriet adopted their daughter, Jamy on December 24, 1974, at the age of 6 weeks; they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Leigh on October 8, 1976. Pat has three grandchildren: Maddy 16, Max 13, and Macy 7. His grandchildren were the “apples of his eye”, he loved them so much.

Pat held several positions in Tekamah. He worked for Ernie Glup, Tekamah Lumber Yard, Tekamah Police Department, Pump Shop, and after 30 years, Pat retired from Burt County Public Power District.

Pat enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, wood working, model airplanes, trains and his Harley Trike Motorcycle. I guess you can say Pat loved “planes, trains and automobiles” and everything outdoors.

Pat loved his wife Harriet, their daughters and their grandchildren; family meant the world to him. He enjoyed working on the family farm with his father and loved helping his brother, Matt with his cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Ethel and Lee Shafer, Nadine and John Simpson.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet; daughters, Jamy (Phil) Tablazon, Leigh (Shannon) Elwood; grandchildren, Maddy, Max and Macy Elwood; brothers, Mike (Kathy) Shafer, Matt Shafer; sister, Wendy (Doug) Carlson.
