Obituary for James "Jim" Rieken

James Robert Rieken, 76, of Tekamah passed away June 11, 2019 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, after a long hard-fought battle with cancer.

Jim was born July 18, 1942 to Robert and Frances (Davison) Rieken in Palmer, Nebraska. In 1955, his family moved to eastern Nebraska, near Herman. He was confirmed, in 1957, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah, where he remained an active member until his death. He graduated from Tekamah High School in 1960.

On Sept. 28, 1963, he and Phyllis Petersen were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah. They resided on their farm northwest of Tekamah for over fifty-five years, where they raised their three daughters: Laura, Annette and Christine.

Jim was engaged in farming all his adult life, raising livestock and row crops. Upon his father’s retirement, he took over Rieken Seed and expanded it to include CRP, small grains, grass seed, legumes and programing Precision Planting Meters for area farmers. Jim was dedicated to the conservation of the land and preservation of wildlife. He and his daughter, Laura established Silver Creek Apiaries, maintaining beehives and selling honey to many, many satisfied customers.

Jim served as a Burt County 4-H Leader for over 20 years. He enjoyed working with youth and remained an active supporter of 4-H and FFA activities. He was a member of Burt County Farm Bureau, serving as a board member for several years. He served as Habitat Chairman for Burt County Pheasants Forever and was a former officer for the Burt-Cuming Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Jim instilled a love of the land and livestock in his family. He loved traveling to 4-H and FFA livestock shows with his daughters and sharing memories of his livestock show years with them. In later years, Jim enjoyed traveling to livestock shows, horse shows and school activities to watch his grandchildren compete or perform. Jim loved spending time with family and celebrated many birthdays eating his birthday cake at the Nebraska State 4-H Horse Show with family and friends.

Jim never met a stranger and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Jim is survived by this wife, Phyllis; daughters, Laura Wickham of Tekamah, Annette Renken of Bertrand, NE and friend, William H. Rhea, III of Arlington, NE, Christine (Rod) Hansen of Zimmerman, MN; sisters, Carolyn (Gary) Moody of Niobrara, NE and Nancy (Roger) Oberg of Farnam, NE; grandchildren, Dr. Dustin Renken of Colorado Springs, CO, Tigh Renken of Bertrand, Eileen Hansen and fiancé Sam Kelley of Green Bay, WI, Lydia Hansen of Zimmerman; brother-in-law, Bob Petersen of Omaha; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Mark) Patterson of Sioux Falls, SD; many nieces and nephews.
