Obituary for Eli Douglas Devney

Eli Douglas Devney passed away, peacefully cuddled in his parents’ arms, at the age of 11 months, on Monday, May 13, 2019 at his home in Tekamah, NE. He bravely fought a hard battle with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, type 0 since the day he was born. Eli showed great strength, courage, and perseverance in his short life on earth. His ability to fight such hard battles was inspiring. He spoke freely with his eyes and showed love to everyone he encountered. Eli loved seeing the world and didn’t want to miss out on anything, so much so, that he often refused to sleep. He was a social butterfly, always observing. He loved wiggling around in water and getting splashed by his older brother. Eli was brave and accomplished so much even though the odds were stacked against him.

He is survived by his father, Eric Dean Devney; his mother, Clarity Jo (Hayden) Devney; his older brother, Wyatt Dean Devney; his loving grandparents, Eric D. Hayden, Kelly J. Hayden, Esther E. Van de Hoek, and Harold D. Devney; his Tante, Melissa E. Jenney; his uncle, Jacob D. Hayden; great grandpa, Jerry D. Cartwright; Oma Elizabeth C. Van de Hoek; Opa Gerrit J. Van de Hoek.

He was preceded in death by his great grandmother, Judith A. (Vanek) Cartwright, great grandfather Harry Hayden; great grandmother, Nona (Smith) Hayden, great grandmother Margery A. Devney, and great great grandfather Rudolph J. Vanek.

You are loved more than you can imagine and will be remembered every day until we see you again sweet boy. Mama and Papa are so proud of you.

All are welcome to come join us in saying goodbye and celebrating Eli’s bravery and strength during his 11 months of life.
