Obituary for Edwin "Ed" Heng

Edwin R. Heng, age 86, of Tekamah, Nebraska passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 30, 2020.

Edwin Robert Heng was born September 23, 1933 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. to John and Coletta Heng.

Edwin graduated from Nebraska City High School. He enlisted in the army in 1954. In August of 1956, Edwin met Cyndy Malone at a dance in Syracuse, Nebraska. Edwin was home on leave. They corresponded until his discharge in December of 1956. On August 14, 1958, Edwin and Cyndy were married and lived in Lincoln. Edwin graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 1960.

In 1960, the family moved to Lyons, Nebraska where Edwin taught high school agriculture. In 1963, they moved to Tekamah, where Edwin worked for Production Credit Association for many years.

Edwin was involved in many civic organizations including past president of the Jaycees, Lions Club and the American Legion. He also coached little league baseball.

Edwin’s passion was his church. He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Tekamah. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was the church trustee for more than 45 years. He was a past member of the parish council. He was instrumental in the building of the new church just west of Tekamah. With the help of others, he planted more than 500 trees on the church grounds; many of the flowers and plants on the grounds were from his own personal flower garden.

The last years of Edwin’s life were spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their many events.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cyndy; son, Randy; brother, Alan Heng; sisters, Ruth Burr, Leta Harshman, Dorothy Funke; brothers-in-law, Bob Burr and Tom Funke.

Survivors include his son, Kirk Heng of Omaha; daughter, Kristi (Todd) Wragge of Hampton, IA; daughter-in-law, Sandy Heng of Omaha; six grandchildren, Alexandra (Heng) and Jay Reicks, Samantha Heng, and McKenna, Paige, Samuel and Claire Wragge; brother, Dwight (Carole) Heng of York, NE; sister, Eileen (Harold) LeGrande of Omaha; brother-in-law, Deroy Harshman of Nebraska City; many other relatives and friends.
