Obituary for Dorrell J. Alexander

Dorrell Jean (Johnson) Alexander was born to Oswald Walter and Esther Victoria Elizabeth (Larson) Johnson on April 23, 1925 in Oakland, Nebraska. She passed away August 20, 2019 at Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Dorrell’s family spent her childhood years in Lyons, Nebraska. It was in Lyons where she would meet Ernest “Ernie” Alexander, Sr. Ernie had recently moved to Lyons with his family. It was on his first day in attendance at Lyons school that he declared he would someday marry Dorrell Johnson. Dorrell and Ernest graduated from Lyons High School together in 1943 and were in fact married on October 9, 1944. That very same love story was one that Ernie would tell with such pride for many years to come.

Ernest and Dorrell moved to the Tekamah area early in their marriage. This is where they would build their life and raise their six children in the following years. Throughout those years Dorrell worked at Wilkinson’s in Fort Calhoun, Tekseed in Tekamah and lastly at the Tekamah nursing home. However, Dorrell’s most prized position was always being home to raise her children. During those years she loved tending to her garden, canning and cooking. She not only cooked for her own family, but she cooked for many of the men who worked the farm with Ernie as well. No one ever left Dorrell’s table hungry or unloved. Her recipes and cooking are still legend today. She was always diligent about putting them on paper to share. However, many have tried to replicate her cooking only to be told, “It’s good but it just isn’t like Mom’s.” Whether it was the extra love she added to everything she did or a secret special ingredient we may never know.

Dorrell and Ernest retired in the Tekamah community. She then spent her time focusing on their growing family. Many of her grandchildren were blessed to spend their younger years in her care. She took great pride in talking about her grandchildren and having pictures displayed for all to see. Whether you were born into Dorrell’s family or welcomed to it later, she loved you just the same. There was always room in her heart for one more. There was never an occasion that you would leave her home without a hug and an “I love you”. This is a tradition that can still be seen throughout the family because they, no doubt, learned from the very best.

Dorrell was a staple at the City Café where she was always accompanied by Ernie and their dachshund Trixie. The three were never apart. Anyone who ever met Dorrell knew that she was always up for a good laugh and a great joke. The great grandchildren were always humored that in her later years she would often have to write the jokes down to ensure she didn’t forget the punchline.

In 2015 Dorrell and Ernest made their final move to the Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska. While there, they would spend their days together socializing, playing Bingo and bird watching.

Dorrell was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; parents; siblings: Doris, Clarence, Dorothy, Fern, Emerald, Dave, Anna Mae, Lauraine and Lauren; granddaughter, Jamie.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Erma Shawver of Lyons and Margaret Johnson of Oakland; brother-in-law, Carol Sappingfield of Gothenburg, NE; children: Ernie Jr ( Mary Jane) Alexander of Omaha, NE; Diana (Joe) Sova of Omaha; Pat (Dick) Sheets of Norfolk; Jeff (Twila) Alexander of Tekamah; Jim (Tricia) Alexander of Tekamah, Christie (Mark) Richardson of Onawa.
