Obituary for Doris Sanderson

Doris Sanderson was born May 4, 1927, in her parents’ home in the Basford area of rural Lyons, Nebraska, to Warren and Hedvig (Rasmussen) Morter. She passed away December 16, 2018 at Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska.

Doris attended Wilson School until she was 10, when her parents moved to Lyons. She then attended Lyons Public School until 1943, when her family moved to Omaha, Nebraska. She attended Central High School, up until her last semester before graduation, at which time she left school to work at the Butternut Bakery to help support her family during the aftermath of the Great Depression.

Having never finished her high school education, Doris lived her life instilling in all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the importance and privilege of education.

During her time at Central High School, Doris was a trailblazer for the young women of her class, as well as those to follow, that were interested in participating in sports. Although she was not permitted to officially participate in sports, Doris did not seem to care, as her and her best friend simply chose to play regardless. Doris played in tennis, softball, and pole vaulted during her time at Central High School.

Later in her life, Doris was a charter member of the Lyons VFW Auxiliary, as well as an avid bowler. She bowled for over 45 years, attending many state and national tournaments. Doris was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

It was not unusual to walk into Doris’ home and find friends sitting at the table drinking coffee and grandchildren and great-grandchildren playing board games and running through the house. This filled her heart with great love.

After the death of her loving husband in 1987, Doris went to work at the Hiway Café. She baked pies and cooked at the café for over 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, LaVerne Beard and Lucille McKenzie; brother, Harlan Morter; great great-granddaughter, Lily Wright.

She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Carlson of Lyons and Janet (Richard) Marr of Fullerton, NE; grandchildren, Lezlie (Lonnie) Olsen of Lyons, Heather Carlson and Mitch Climer of Blair, NE, Amy (Charles) Wheaton of Lyons, Waylon (fiancée Jamie Ferguson) Carlson of Lyons, Schawn (Troy) League of Lincoln NE, Jordana (Travis) Smith of Lincoln; great grandchildren, Bryce and Kayli Wheaton, Dylan and Danielle Climer, Chance Wright, Cameron, Maddux and Connor League, Drue Marr, Alex Smith, Hunter and Brennan Ferguson; two nieces, one nephew.
