Linnea C. Young

1913 ~ 2011

ANNA LINNEA CHARLOTTA LINDGREN YOUNG was born July 11, 1913, to Josephus and Hannah (Bring) Lindgren on the Bring farm 2 ½ miles east of Lyons, Burt County, Nebraska. She passed away Friday, June 17, 2011, at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 97 years.

Linnea attended Viles country school through ten grades, finishing two grades at Lyons High School, graduating in 1932. Her mother died the summer before her senior year and her sister, Alice, stayed home to care for the family so Linnea could graduate. Alice had finished the 10th grade at Viles and was to go to Lyons High in the fall. The girls took turns taking care of the family of nine, which was quite a task.

As the girls got older, the sisters took turns “working out” sometimes for only $2 or $3 a week. When some of her sisters took over the caring of the family, Linnea worked both in Omaha and Sioux City.

While home, Linnea was active in extension work and was a 4H leader for many years. Linna was a life-long member, baptized and confirmed, at First Lutheran Church in Oakland. She was a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Missionary Society and Lutheran Church Women. Since it was so far to her church, she joined Young Peoples Christian Endeavor at Divide Center and participated in social events in both the Viles and Divide Center communities.

In October 1940, Linnea married Vernon Young and moved to the Young homestead 1 mile north of Oakland, less than 10 miles from where she was born. Two sons were born to them, Roger Allan in 1941 and William Carroll in 1944. Vernon died in 1959. Linnea stayed on the farm 5 years. She started working at the Oakland Rest Home, buying the facility in 1962. She moved to a home in Oakland and lived there about 40 years. After the Rest Home closed, she was Activities Director at Oakland Heights when it opened. She retired after working 15 years full time and part time there. She resided at Oakland Heights Assisted Living Center.

Her volunteer work included the Golden Oaks Senior Citizens Center and Oakland Heights. She did the newsletter for the Golden Oaks for many years. She wrote a column for the Oakland Independent, “Young at Heart”, and wrote the newsletter at the Assisted Living even following her retirement. Linnea wrote her own obituary. Linnea belonged to extension clubs and 4H clubs, UGO IGO Club and the Busy Twelve Club. She was a 4 H leader for many years and led a neighborhood Bible Study group for thirty or more years. At the Assisted Living, she was active in crafts and liked puzzles of all kinds.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; brothers, Clifford and Paul Lindgren; sisters, Evelyn Carlson and Alice Gill; daughter-in-law, Lois Young.

She leaves 2 sons and daughter-in-law, Roger and Pat Young of Windsor, Colorado, Bill Young of Austin, Minnesota; 8 grandchildren; sisters & brother-in-law,  Marilyn and Dale Fuchser of Pender, Nebraska, Olive Ricey of Laguna Hills, California; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Marge Lindgren of Hendricks, Minnesota, Clarence and Alice Lindgren of Lyons, Nebraska.
