BETTY A. YOUNG, 83 years, of Oakland, Nebraska.

BETTY ALICE YOUNG was born to Benjamin Franklin and Lydia Mabel (Friis) Young on July 30, 1927 at the Community Hospital in Oakland, Nebraska.  She passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Creighton Medical Center/Saint Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska with her family at her side.

Betty graduated from Craig High School and on June 28, 1947 she married Dean Leroy Corbin in Craig, Nebraska.  Dean and Betty raised four children while farming in the Craig area. The family also lived for a time in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Cedar Falls, Iowa. Betty and Dean divorced in 1969.

Betty earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social work from the University of Northern Iowa.  She received her Master’s of Science in Agency Counseling at age 61 from University of Nebraska and a Masters of Social Work at age 72 from University of Wyoming.

Betty married Svend Hemmingsen on March 24, 1973 and they later divorced on December 23, 1980.

Betty was known for her active mind and determined spirit.  She loved her family and was devoted to keeping them all connected.  Among her many other interests were her community, genealogy, nature, astronomy and helping others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Phil and Pam Corbin of Urbandale, Iowa; Dan and Becky Corbin of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Daughter: Catherine McBride; Daughter and son-in-law: Lydia and Wayne Arnold of Lincoln, Nebraska, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE: Saturday, June 4, 2011, 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Oakland. In honor of Betty, the family encourages hats to be worn by the women in attendance.

BURIAL: Craig Cemetery, Craig, Nebraska

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska.
