Virgene M. Worth

1923 ~ 2009

 

VIRGENE MARIE WORTH was born May 19, 1923 in Uehling, Nebraska, the oldest of four children born to William Herman and Hannah Francis (Carlberg) Koehler. She passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009, at the Saunders County Medical Center in Wahoo, Nebraska, at the age of 85.

Virgene grew up in the Uehling and Craig areas. She graduated from Craig High School in 1940 and then attended Midland College in Fremont.

Virgene and Melvin Worth met at a dance in Craig. They then married June 8, 1949 at the Craig Methodist Church. They began their life together in Oakland in the house that Melvin built at 109 Brewster Street. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June of this year. To this union, three children were born; Dan Melvin, Todd William and Jayne Marie. Virgene was the wonderful grandmother to five grandchildren.

Virgene spent thirty-three years in the teaching profession which included the country school districts of Harmony, Nolana, Pleasant Way, and District 15, south of Craig. Virgene remained part of the Oakland-Craig school system working in the Kitchen for the remainder of her career. She retired in 1990
Following her retirement, Virgene and Melvin had many active years of attending dances, concerts, family activities, and many other social events within the region. Virgene was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Oakland, United Methodist Women, the VFW Auxiliary Post #5543 in Oakland, Aksarben and the Nebraska Teachers Association. Virgene also served as a Girl Scout Leader.

When their health began to fail, Virgene and Melvin moved to the Saunders County Care Center November 25, 2003, where Melvin is currently residing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Glenyce and nephew Bobby.

Survivors include her husband Melvin of Wahoo, children and spouses: Dan and Laurie, Todd and Rena all of Lincoln, Jayne and Kenneth Taylor of Mead; grandchildren Julia Worth of Chicago, Illinois, Peter Worth of Lincoln, Chloe Worth of Lincoln, Hannah Taylor and fiancée Wylee Anderson of Omaha, Adam Taylor of Lincoln; brothers: Edwin Koehler and Darlene of Pittsburg, Kansas, James Koehler and Mary of Dubuque, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, March 30, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Oakland, Nebraska

VISITATION: Sunday 1- 8 pm. with the family receiving friends from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland and Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.

BURIAL: Oakland Cemetery
