Lucile Jack Payne

1919 ~ 2011

 

LUCILE JACK PAYNE, 92years, resident of Collington Life Care Community in Mitchellville, Maryland, and formerly a resident of New Carrollton, Maryland died May 21, 2011.

Lucile was born in Tekamah Nebraska on March 1, 1919, the daughter of the late Dora L. and Arthur H. Jack. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. During her career as a dietitian, she worked for the Public Health Service, Boys Town, the University of Iowa, and Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington DC. She married Howard Kenneth Payne in Iowa City, Iowa on December 30, 1950. In 1975, she accompanied Howard to Nairobi, Kenya where he was on a two-year assignment as a Universal Postal Union expert with the East African Posts & Telecommunications Corporation to train postal management and reorganize three postal training schools in the region. Her generous heart and quiet, loving nature made her a friend to all she encountered. She was devoted to her beloved dachshunds, Buck and Luke, and subsequent dogs she adopted over the years. In honor of her older sister Dorothy, a lifelong teacher, she established the Jack Family Scholarship under the auspices of the Tekamah-Herman Public Schools Foundation which has the mission to assist students going into the field of education.

She is survived by her nephew, Jack Charles Urban of Kalamazoo, Michigan and her niece, Sara Urban Ensor of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Kenneth Payne and her two sisters, Dorothy Jack Christianson and Martha Jack Urban.

Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of Maryland and Pelan Funeral Services in Tekamah, Nebraska.

MEMORIAL SERVICE WITH MILITARY HONORS: A graveside memorial service for Lucile and her husband, Howard will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011, 10:30 a.m. with Military Honors at the Tekamah Cemetery, Tekamah, NE.
