John H. Nelson

1919 ~ 2011

JOHN H. NELSON was born June 26, 1919, in rural Hooper, Nebraska, to Joe and Amelia (Weigle) Nelson. He passed away Sunday, July 3, 2011, at the Hooper Care Center in Hooper, Nebraska, at the age of 92 years.

John graduated from Hooper High School. He served in the United States Army and as World War II veteran, was awarded the Bronze Star.

In February 1955, John and Doris Jean (Egbers) were united in marriage at Elim Lutheran Church in rural Hooper. John and Doris lived on a farm near Craig from that time forward.
              
John was a long-time and active member of Elim Lutheran Church and a member and officer of the American Legion in Craig and the VFW in Oakland.

He was preceded in death by parents; wife, Doris Jean; brothers, Ernie and Richard; stepdaughter, Connie Lynn Gustafson; son, Danny Joe Nelson.

Survivors include stepson and daughter-in-law, Rod & Diane Wagner of Lincoln, Nebraska; son-in-law, Darwin Gustafson of Montgomery, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Darin Gustafson and wife, Megan, of Blair, Nebraska,  Dawn Jorgensen and husband, Jason, of Arvada, Colorado, Jennifer Jex and husband, Russell, of Lincoln, Brian Wagner of Bellevue, Nebraska, Jim Wagner of New Orleans, Louisiana; eight great grandchildren, Bailey, Brady, Barrett and Brody Jex, Ellison, Kailee and Jared Jorgensen,  Archer John Gustafson; niece, Joyce Nelson of Uehling.
              
FUNERAL SERVICE: Wednesday, July 6, 2011, 10:30 a.m. at Elim Lutheran Church, rural Hooper, Nebraska.


BURIAL: Swaburg Cemetery, rural Hooper, Nebraska, with Military Honors by: American Legion Post No. 127 of Craig, Ryan VFW Post No. 5543, American Legion Post No. 46 of Oakland.


VISITATION: Tuesday 1 – 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 – 7 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation Wednesday will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
