J. Norman Landholm

1922 ~ 2009

 

JOHN NORMAN LANDHOLM was born February 8, 1922 in rural Cuming County, Nebraska to Edwin and Ruth (Persson) Landholm. He went to be with the Lord Monday, August 17, 2009, at the Oakland Mercy Hospital in Oakland at the age of 87 years.

Norman graduated from Oakland High School in 1939.

On December 31, 1944, Norman married Dolores Elaine Peterson at Salem Covenant Church in rural Oakland. They started their married life on the same farm place that Norman’s parents lived on when they were first married. To this union were born six children.

Norman farmed for over 30 years and they lived on four area farms before moving to Oakland in 1973. At this time, he took a job with the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He worked there until a serious accident forced his retirement in 1990.  He took up woodworking which was instrumental in his rehabilitation and it became an enjoyable hobby that provided cherished keepsakes for his family.

In his younger years, Norman served as Sunday school superintendent, sang in the men’s quartet and taught junior and senior high Sunday school classes at Salem Covenant Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dolores (December 21, 2007); brother, Charles; great granddaughter, Taylor Grace Figlewicz; brothers-in-law, Ted Swanson and Ray Merritt.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Sam Nelson of Lincoln, sons and daughters-in-law, Clair and Doris of Norfolk, Nebraska, Curt and Bev of West Point, Nebraska, Carlton and Janet of Harbor City, California, Clayton of West Hollywood, California, Charles of Long Beach, California; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Merritt of Keene, New Hampshire, Lois Swanson of Hudson, Wisconsin, Jeanette and Larry Dieckman of Elburn, Illinois; sister-in-law, Sharon Landholm of Fremont, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Friday, August 21, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at the Salem Covenant Church in rural Oakland.

VISITATION: Thursday, August 20, 2009, 1 - 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 - 8 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation Friday will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

BURIAL: Westside Cemetery, rural Oakland, Nebraska.
