Marjorie R. Holmes

1915 ~ 2008

 

MARJORIE RUTH HOLMES was born November 8, 1915, in Oakland, Nebraska to William and Alvina (Westphal) Miller. She passed away Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Oakland Heights Nursing Home in Oakland at the age of 93 years.

Marjorie graduated from Oakland High School in 1933 as Valedictorian of her class. She was confirmed at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, where she was a life-long member.

Marjorie and Leroy “Lefty” Holmes were united in marriage on February 15, 1936. To this union two sons were born: Robert and Jon. Marjorie and Lefty lived on the farm until retiring in 1986 and moving into Oakland. Lefty passed away on December 31, 1991.

At First Lutheran, Marjorie served as president and secretary of the Dorcas Society, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir, Marjorie loved music. She was a member of the Oakland Garden Club, where she served as secretary and was a Charter member of the East Oaks Project Club, where she served as president and secretary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leroy “Lefty”; two brothers: Arthur, who died in infancy and Rudolph Miller of Council Bluffs, Iowa; four sisters: Clara Lake of Florida, Henrietta Petersen of California, Malinda Boyer of Colorado and Eda Miller of Oakland, who died at a young age.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law: Robert and Esther of Omaha, Jon of Amarillo, Texas; granddaughter: Debra Anne Fox and her husband, John, of Seal Beach, California; two great grandchildren: Kyer and Karson.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Monday, December 8, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.

VISITATION: Sunday, December 7, 2008, 4 - 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 - 8 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation will also be held Monday at the church one hour prior to the service.

BURIAL: Oakland Cemetery, Oakland, Nebraska
