DORIS G. CHERRY, 93 years passed away in Lincoln, NE, Monday, December 26, 2011. Formerly of Craig, NE.
Doris was born July 31, 1918, in Tekamah, NE to Walter L and Gladys M. (Banbury) Marine, the oldest of six siblings. She married James Cherry July 30, 1939, in Plattsmouth, NE.

She was preceded in death by husband, James and grandson, David Cherry of Harlingen, TX; sisters, Rosemand McAllister, Ella Mae Cannell and Martha Landholm.

Survived by sons and daughters-in-law, James G. (Alice) Cherry  of Harlingen, TX, Marvin R. (Mary) Cherry of Arlington, NE; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn (James) Schepers of  Lincoln; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; sister, Frances Jensen of Tekamah and brother, Vernon Marine of Catoosa, OK.

Most of Doris’s life was spent in Burt County, where she and James farmed northeast of Craig. James also was Clerk of the District Court and Doris worked as a nurse’s aide for years at the Oakland Memorial Hospital. She showed great compassion for her patients. They moved to Lincoln, NE in 1989 for retirement years.

They were long-time members of the Craig Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the women’s circle, Sunday School teacher and organizer of the Mariners couples group. Doris was a Cub Scout den mother, 4-H leader and member of the Sunnyside Extension Club for 50 years.

Doris was an avid gardener and had an extensive indoor plant collection. A very green thumb was one of her attributes of nurturing and could help anything grow vigorously. She had a love of cats and dogs and was a life saver for many strays. Both parents passed on this love of nature to their children.

She enjoyed her back home friends and newly found friends in Lincoln. She and James were active in the nondenominational retired couples group known as Southgaters. After James’s passing in May of 1999, Doris was active in the Widower’s group of Lincoln.

They had unconditional love for their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed traveling with friends and family and seeing new sites.

They had a Siamese cat named Crystal who lived to be 20 years old. She was a loved companion of both Doris and James. Crystal passed away two days before Doris. She seemed to know it was time to go be with Doris and James in Heaven.
