Don attended elementary school at Bacon Country School and graduated from Blackbird High School in 1940.  He continued his education at Frye Air Craft School in Omaha, Nebraska.

On January 29, 1942, Don and Betty Deman were married at the Lutheran Parsonage in Dakota City, Nebraska.  To this union four children were born. Don and Betty would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on January 29th. They lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Donald worked for United Airlines until returning to Nebraska to farm.  Donald owned and operated the Logan Valley Cafe for several years in addition to his farming.

Throughout the years, Donald served on several rural school boards.  He also worked part-time with the Burt County Assessor’s Office.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and is a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Lyons.

Donald and Betty loved to get in the car and travel.  He always said he was going whichever direction the car turned that morning.  But he dearly loved the mountains and seemed to always end up at Estes Park.  They owned a motor home for several years and also a home in Yuma, Arizona. Donald enjoyed visiting with family and friends and offering a cup of coffee and something to eat.  His grandchildren were very important to him and each was given their own "Loving Nickname".
