1928 ~ 2009
GERALD LEROY BACON was born March 24, 1928, in Lyons, Nebraska, to William and Neta (Pond) Bacon. He passed away Monday, July 20th, 2009, at the Logan Valley Manor in Lyons at the age of 81 years.
Gerald’s family lived in the Blackbird and Bacon communities east and north of Lyons. He attended the Bacon Country School and for two years of high school, the Blackbird High School. His last two years of high school were in Lyons, where he and his twin brother Harold, graduated in 1945.
On May 12, 1951, Gerald was married to Mary Ann Swanson in Decatur. Farming was his life’s passion.
Gerald served in the U. S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He was stationed at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, Colorado, and at the Atomic Testing Grounds at Mercury, Nevada, where he saw and was exposed to eight atom bomb drops.
Gerald was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Decatur. He was also a member of the Decatur American Legion Rogers-Crum Post No. 215.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, James Leroy; brothers, John Edward and Donald; sister and brother-in-law: Marjorie and Roland Newell.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann of Lyons; sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Pam of Decatur, Daniel and Diane of Lyons; daughter, Cheryl Bacon of Lyons; five grandchildren, Brandon Bacon, Tanner (Jaime) Bacon, Tracy (Tom) Sailors, Tanya Bacon, Jacob Bush; great granddaughter, Alayna Sailors; twin brother and sisters-in-law, Harold and Bonnie Bacon, Betty Bacon all of Lyons; special friends, Dewey and Erma Shawver, Albert Christ all of Lyons; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Thursday, July 23, 2009, 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ Decatur Restoration Branch, Decatur, Nebraska, with Military Honors by the VFW Gleason-Rogers Post No. 6926 and American Legion Rogers-Crum Post No. 215
